THIRD WEEK
MAPAGMASID KA KAIBIGAN
ni Sheryl lou Mandriza
\Oh! Kaibigan iyong
pagmasdan
Kay daming basurahan
Bakit basura mo’y itinapon
Mo lang kung saan.
Wag kang bastos at pulutin mo yan.
Maawa ka naman sa mga tagalinis
Nitong ating paaralan
Di porket ika’y mayaman
At anak ng may kapangyarihan
Isipin mo naman ang kalikasan
At sa mga taong nahihirapan
Dulot ng
ating kapabayaan
Galit na ang kalikasan
di mo ba nararamdaman?
Ang dati’y liwanag ng araw
ay maaari pa tayong maghabulan.
Ngayon umaga pa lang
takot na tayong masinagan
Dahil sa sobrang init
na
ating maramdaman.
Kaibigan tayo’y magtulungan
Walang mahirap dito o mayaman
Lahat tayo’y maaapektuhan
Sa kung ano mang mangyayari sa ating
kapaligiran.
Gumawa tayo ng paraan para maibsan
Ang nagbabadyang unos sa galit ng inang
kalikasan
Oh! Kaibigan baguhin mo na ang iyong
nakagawian

SECOND WEEK
THE WEDDING DANCE
The wedding dance is a
story of a married couple in the mountain tribes of Northern Luzon. Who have
been married for seven harvest period but still they are unlucky because their
god Kabunyan did not bless them a child. According to the story if a man does
not have a son he is considered to be inferior to the other in their community.
Awiyao loves Lumnay, yet he needs to redeem himself by remarrying another woman
named Madulimay to finally have a child, for the society will accept him.

Awiyao went back to
the wedding feast, after being fetched by a friend. Lumnay decided to go to the
wedding she wanted to protest against the written rule of their tribe about a
man can carry another woman. But seeing his husband marrying another woman,
suddenly she stopped and turned back, defeated. She walked away from dancing
ground, away from the village. She went to the mountain where she diverted all
her bittersweet memories.
"A
few more weeks, a few more months, a few more harvests---what did it matter?
She would be holding the bean flowers, soft in the texture, silken almost, but
moist where the dew got into them, silver to look at, silver on the light blue,
blooming whiteness, when the morning comes. The stretching of the bean pods
full length from the hearts of the wilting petals would go on." Lumnay’s
finger moved a long, long time among the growing bean pods.
Wedding
Dance by Amador T. Daguio is such a nice story that opens us to the forgotten
culture of our Filipino tribes in the Philippines. It made us aware on how the
way of their living associated with their tradition and belief. Like of what
had happened in the story they let their tribe law dictates their future. It
just like marriage in this culture was seen as an agreement
between a man and a woman for the purposes of creating children.
Awiyao force to leave Lumnay, in order to satisfy
the society’s expected norms and the bitter truth about the inequality of the
sexes. Man vs. society is the main conflict that revolved around the story. The
author used the third person point of view omniscient. The narrator knows
everything about all the characters is all knowing. We can see the thoughts of
the characters when the narrator reveals them to the readers. The author also
used symbolism in his story; seed is the symbol dramatizes the fertility of the
land as against the feeling of barrenness and loneliness in the wedding dance.

FIRST WEEK
Kiko and
his brother found a strange chicken one day. They argue over it because they
could not tell whether it is a hen or a rooster. They began to ask their
parents about it and they also argued all themselves. They decided to consult
Tinienteng Tasio, the head or the chief of the village, but unfortunately could
not also tell the gender of the chicken. After that, they went to Mr. Eduardo
Cruz, he lived in the nearby town of Alcala and who had studied poultry
husbandry at Los Baños, and he operated a large egg farm. Mr. Cruz said to them
if it’s okay to cut it up and examine it, but Kiko yelled no, so the brothers
walked home empty-handed. So instead, they decided to test the chicken to a
cockfight; it was match with a red Texan rooster. A strange thing happened in
the match, the red rooster did the love dance with the peculiar chicken
meaning, the Texan rooster fell in love with the peculiar chicken, but the
peculiar chicken kill the Texan rooster. Unexpected, their chicken won the
fight which lead to a riot. They thought it was the last sign to tell their
chicken is a rooster but to be surprise, as they ran away to the hall, the
chicken laid an egg.
This story
reminds us that we Filipinos are fun of reading and writing humorous stories
which inline the rich culture of our country. That Filipinos love to laugh and
have fun. We have sense of humor amidst
the problems that we encounter day by day; being able to see the bright side of
life in the midst of adversity, we can still laugh at our problems. However,
there are also disadvantages of Filipino Humor which is quite disturbing. Like
the issues of gambling, cockfights as mention in the story, card games,
karerahan and pustahan vices that we adopt during the time of our colonizers.
The story happen in cornfield; a
barrio, the author which is Alejandro Roces better known as Anding Roces
focuses on the ignored rich culture of our country. The style is richly –
detailed and flow
ing and as we notice the story’s voice it is somewhat comical
or funny. The author uses the first person point of view.
The conflict of the story is
about the unusual chicken, whether it is a hen or a rooster. Kiko says it is a
rooster, his brother says it is a hen their father says it is a hen, a lesbian
hen while their mother says it is a rooster, a gay one the teniente del barrio
says it must be a bird of some kind, Mr. Eduardo Cruz he has to kill the hen
and examine it to identify. The complication is that the chicken has
characteristic of both hen and rooster, that the reason why they are arguing.
So the brothers try to find answers to their questions. Finally, after the
cockfight the brother convince that it is a rooster; it seems that the peculiar
chicken of Kiko is rooster but suddenly his peculiar chicken lay an egg that
will give an idea for the reader’s that his peculiar chicken is a hen.
